Subject:Lurker finally adopts one of her own...
Time:09:42 am
Hello. I came by to connect with other Chi parents. Though I must add I had been a lurker previously.
A little over a year ago I became a doggy mommy for the first time, I'd been interested in the Chihuahua breed for years and this was solidified while staying a week with a friend that had a troop of 5.
Since adopting Martin who's now 4 I must say having a dog is way different than 2 cats. He's very loyal and wants to be with me or my partner all the the time. However he's definitely a momma's boy. Daddy is fine but momma is better. :) It could just be that I was the one that got him from the shelter, because he spends most of his time during the day with dad. (Is it odd to use the mom and dad terms? We don't have kids so that's maybe why...) Anyway, we found out right away he's VERY food motivated. He was 10.3lbs when we adopted him and the vet said he should be around 5lbs. It took about 6 months to get him to 7lbs by incorporating extra veggies and a decreased amount of dry/wet food and 3-4 walks a day. I think he's actually a good weight for his size and has hovered there for awhile now. Part of the being food motivated is that he gets into things a lot which cause tummy issues pretty quickly it seems. Read moreCollapse )

Subject:Chi/chi mix looking for a home in SF Bay Area
Time:11:03 pm
Hello fellow chi owners :)

I have a sweet girl that I'm trying to find an loving home for. She is a bit of a special needs child (behavioral, will explain bellow) and is not doing well in my house, it's pretty stressful here and my dad and sister don't like my dogs. I adore this girl, but I'm a working student and don't really have the means for moving out anytime soon, I think that with the proper environment Margarita would just bloom into a more confident dog :)

Her name is Margarita but she also answers to Bella or Rita. She's between 3-5 years old, 8lbs, up to date on vaccines, spayed, microchipped and potty trained. She used to be crate trained but I don't have any crates at the moment to see how she does with them now.

She originally came from a shelter, I was foster mom and I had her for several months before she got adopted to a nice home. A couple of months ago the owner returned her to me because her living situation had suddenly changed and she couldn't have her anymore. I had every intention of keeping her as she gets along great with my dogs (you can see them in the pictures) and my two cats, she's just the sweetest and most gentle girl. Unfortunately it isn't working out because she's pretty sensitive and nervous and I'm not home during the day at all, my house is loud, my dad and sister are often arguing and neither one of them like her.

Her main behavior issue is that she's nervous/very sensitive. Example: people start arguing in the room and she cowers down trembling, or runs to hide with her tail between her legs. If you're angry at her or scream at her, she has the same reaction and may even start crying/screaming. Picking her up too roughly/suddenly will also make her start screaming. When we went to the vet for her vaccines she made such a racket just at being restrained (the needle was no where near her) that the vet came into the room to see what was going on. It always takes her a little while to get used to new people, so she really isn't a dog that any stranger can pick up, she may growl or bark at them if she doesn't already know them and trust them. She is not a biter and doesn't have a history of bitting though.

Her other issue is that she is leash reactive, mostly towards other dogs but sometimes towards strangers too. I'd been working on that before she got adopted the first time and she'd be doing better but when she was returned to me it'd become a lot worse.

That said, when she's relaxed and happy (which is most of the time) she's got a wonderful personality. She's very affectionate and a total lap dog. She's always incredibly gentle, whether it's playing with you hands or taking treats. She loves her toys and really loves other dogs (once she's gotten used to them) and plays with them real nicely. She sleeps under the covers with me every night and does a little dance on her back feet when I get home. At first it may take her a couple of days to get use to her new family, but once she does she will adore her family.

Other than that she's your typical small dog: Velcro dog that loves being carried around, barks at people at the door/mailman but is quiet at home the rest of the time, gets cold easily and is used to wearing clothes (she's got tons of them!), can be a little picky about her food (currently eating canned Blue Buffalo, sometimes she'll nibble on the dry food). She's not destructive and does not have separation anxiety.

She needs a stable home with patient owners and no small children around.

Subject: Medical problems
Time:05:58 pm
This may sound really stupid to some since it concerns my health but whatever, I've got a problem: I recently underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and got my gallbladder removed...point being that the doc who treated me said that one of the reasons why I had to get it removed is all the animal fur I breathe in (along with my temper and stress) so I have to get rid of all my four dogs and ferret. The thing is I really don't want to if I can help it.

So the main question is: Has any of you had this (or a similar surgery) and was told to get rid of your pets? Did you do it or did you find someway to keep them?

I've already contacted the ferret shelter and some friends who would be happy to take in the dogs (a chihuahua and three beagles). I really really don't want to give them away but I can't compromise my health either.

So help please?
